So I read the tutorial on uLaunchELF. Here is what I did:

1. Made a swap tool
2. Burned the .iso using nero burning rom at 4x (the slowest setting available)
3. Then I started the PS2
4. Went to the browser
5. Inserted Tomb Raider III PS1 game
6. After it was done loading, I used the swap tool to move the protection and pulled the disc out and swapped it with the burnt cd-r
7. pushed it back in and moved the protection back
selected the ps1 disc on the browser
8. it loads a screen with the words playstation and smes or watever... no logo just a black screen with those words

did I do something wrong or what?
I am sure that I did the swap right.

I have a SCPH-39001 which I believe is version 7
I sometimes get that with my uLaunchELF disc too, it's like the PS2 thinks you've put in a PS1 disc. I've got an ancient Messiah chip and I usually just reset my PS2 a few times and it starts working.

On a successful boot, you'll see the PlayStation2 logo for about half a second, then it will boot into uLaunchELF.

Isn't the point of this exploit to make the PS2 think that your backup is a PS1 disk? Anyway I will try it five times in a row and see what happens. I also heard something about taping the disc so that certain models can read it since they aren't as good.

No it did not work... also tried doing it with "gameshark2 for ps1 games" would the independence hack help any?
Maybe try burning it on a few different brands of CDR. I have about 5 copies of uLaunchELF, they're all identical except for the brand of CDR, and only one of them works.

If you use the Independence exploit, you should be able to get uLaunchELF to boot all by itself off the memory card. I've been meaning to try it, but I think the Independence exploit needs an original PS1 disc, which I'm too lazy to buy.
I think you are right. I think that light discs like mine which is white/silver on the front and like a normal cdrom on the back. I think that darker discs should work better like black or blue which is the same as playstation 1 and 2 discs. Maybe I will go buy some. I also read about a trick that involves tapeing parts of the disc so that it can be read better.
I just tried to make a 1:1 copy of my WORKING uLaunchElf disc (using a Sony CDR), and even that doesn't play.

The weird thing is, my working disc is burnt on a no name CDR from an el cheapo 100x spindle.
What version of PS2 do you have? I am using memorex discs and others online say that they work just find. I guess with version 7 it does a double check so that you can't use the swap without swap magic or a modchip. I guess that I am going to buy swap magic 3.6 for $24 + shipping soon as the money is done transferring to my paypal. So I should have it by the end of the week or beginning of next.
Not sure what version my PS2 is. I bought it in 2000, and it has one of the first Messiah chips.

I'm bidding on a PS1 disc on eBay (99 cents!), and am going to try the Independence exploit in about a week. Hopefully I won't have to launch uLaunchElf from CDR anymore after that (I'll put it on a memory card instead).
Problem solved Smile got swap magic and ran a ULaunchELF disc and I did the independence exploit with it which was pretty easy. I got a crappy network connection with computer using Xlink but it allows me to transfer files anyway. I also go a 8gb usb stick that I used at first. PGen emulator for sega worked pretty good but I wanna play snes games and snes station only lets you load from cdrom unless you get the patched versions and they suck. SMS media player can't play the files on the network or read the usb or memory cards but oh well. I will be tweaking for a bit I guess.
